The newly elected Bishop of Speyer, Damian Hugo von Schönborn, decides to build his residence palace in Bruchsal.

1720

 

The site for the palace in Bruchsal is specified, the court architect Maximilian von Welsch is commissioned with the draft, which has not been preserved, and the work begun.

1720-1723

 

The court architect Johann Georg Seitz builds the "Kammerflügel".

1723-1728

 

Michael Ludwig Rohrer supervises the building of the "Kirchenflügel", "Hauptbau", "Damianstor", "Kanzleigebäude", "Landhospital" (State Hospital) and "Seminar" (Seminary).

1725-1726

 

Anselm Franz Freiherr von Ritter zu Grünstein designs the "Corps de Logis". Damian Hugo von Schönborn changes the plans by adding a "Mezzaningeschoss", making it impossible to build the staircase up into the planned top floor.

1728-1755

 

Johann Georg Stahl is appointed architect of the bishopric Speyer in 1728 and sees to the building of the palace.

1731-1753

 

Balthasar Neumann advises von Schönborn, solves the staircase problem and erects additional buildings.

1743-1770

 

von Schönborn's successor, Franz Christoph Freiherr von Hutten zu Stolzenfels, continues his work.

1755-1774

 

Johann Leonard Stahl takes over the work as his father's successor.

1770-1797

 

Bishop Count Damian August von Limburg-Stirum has several rooms altered in the style of Louis Seize to suite the taste of the age.

1803

 

The Bruchsal Residence Palace falls to the House of Baden in the course of secularization.

1803-1832

 

Margravine Amalie von Baden lives in the palace, which stands empty following her death.

1900-1909

 

An initial restoration is carried out under Fritz Hirsch.

1. März 1945

 

The town and palace in Bruchsal are heavily damaged in a bombing raid.

1946-1950

 

Measures are taken to secure the palace and individual buildings are restored.

1964-1975

 

The state of Baden-Württemberg decides to rebuild the main palace building and to use it as a museum. Royal state-rooms are restored in accordance with their original appearance.

1976-1981

 

Work is carried out on the grounds.

1990-1996

 

The palace garden is restored.
