The Palace Garden

Luftaufnahme Schlossanlage Bruchsal

The palace garden extends to the west of the palace to the plain of the Rhine. It was laid out beginning in 1721 together with the palace, and thus formed a unit with it from the outset. Terraces directly in front of and on the side of the "Hauptbau" emphasize this close connection to palace architecture.

According to plans from Johann Franz Scheer, a baroque garden with terraces, orangery buildings, round basins with fountains, double avenues and a "Broderieparterre" (parterre areas in French formal style). In the years that followed the garden was lengthened, and in 1759 the figures with the center axis were added. They represent four soldiers carrying halberds and the baroque program of the seasons and the four elements.

From 1760 a landscape garden according to the English model was realized in Bruchsal, and has been preserved up until today in the side sections. The old stand of trees still partially adorns this area. The romantic grottos near the swan pool are a work of the early 20th century. Since 1996 the restored Upper Bruchsal Palace Garden has been accessible to the public as an inner-city recreational area. The middle and lower palace garden is separated from the remaining section by the train line and is preserved as an avenue.
